America’s 8 Favorite Sandwiches

Go to a place like American Deli, and you’ll encounter a wide range of sandwich options that you might not find in a regular burger joint. Sure, you can pay over $7 for a burger here, and also find hotdogs and chicken sandwiches. But the sheer variety of sandwiches might confound you.

Which of these sandwiches will appeal to your taste buds? If you’re not sure, you might want to check out a 2019 survey that tried to discover America’s favorite sandwiches. The respondents were asked to rate various sandwiches, with scale that went from “really dislike” to “really like”. And these are the various sandwiches that garnered the most likes:

  • Grilled Cheese

The simple grilled cheese sandwich tops all the sandwiches on this list, as it has the approval of 79% of the survey respondents. What makes it so popular? Perhaps it’s just the very simplicity of it that makes it so endearing. It’s easy enough to make, and the taste is so comfortingly familiar and yummy.

There’s simply no way to eat this wrong. You can eat this as it is, perhaps with a soda, a hot cup of brewed coffee, or even just with water. Or you can accompany it with soup, or even any sort of dish you might like.

  • Grilled Chicken

It’s somewhat surprising to find the grilled chicken so high on this list. But then again, the fried chicken version wasn’t one of the options in the survey. It’s liked by 75% of the respondents, making it only behind the grilled cheese as the most-liked sandwich among the options.

Perhaps what makes it so popular is that it’s the healthier version of the chicken sandwich. Also, it tastes great when you add lettuce, onions, and tomato. Grilled chicken is also more popular, it seems, as a sandwich rather than when eaten as is, unlike fried chicken when people don’t need the bread to enjoy the chicken.

  • Turkey

Sure, you probably have days of turkey sandwiches right after Thanksgiving, as the sandwich is one convenient way of dealing with the turkey leftovers. But to be honest, plenty of us enjoy turkey sandwiches at any time of the year.

It’s a sandwich that just about everyone has brought to school or work, and it’s really rare to find people to really dislike the meat. Also, turkey is special in that it works nicely with just about ay kind of topping you might want to try. This versatility makes for a nice time in the kitchen if you’re in the mood to experiment.

  • Roast Beef

There are days when bird meat is just not what you’re craving, and often that means going for the classic roast beef sandwich instead. Pair it with any type of cheese you like, and it tastes great. You can also enjoy it warm or cold—there’s no need to eat it quickly after making the sandwich. You can just savor it, just like 71% of the respondents who like this sandwich.

Try this with a bed of lettuce, then follow it up with the roast beef and cheese. Then top it all off with thin slices of tomatoes and cucumbers, and you’re good to go.

  • BLT

The name stands for bacon, lettuce, and tomato, and it makes for a classic combo. It may seem simple, but it’s liked by 69% of the respondents. It’s easy to make, and really easy to enjoy. Who doesn’t like bacon, anyway?

  • Ham Sandwich

This is actually tied with the BLT, as it also scores high among 69% of the survey respondents. It may be simple to make, but that’s part of why it’s popular. Get the lower bread with a bed of lettuce, and then put in some tomato slices. Then just add the ham slices, and you’re good to go.

It’s up to you, really, whether you add more toppings and cheese to mix. Finding out your favorite BLT combo is part of the fun.

  • Club Sandwich

This is basically the enhanced version of the BLT. You have the bacon, lettuce, and tomato, then you add some sort of cooked poultry like chicken or turkey. That’s essentially what’s the club sandwich is all about.

Purists say that you have to have some mayo slathered in there, so go ahead and add the mayo. Others also insist that you should have 3 toasted bread slices instead of just two, as in a regular sandwich. You may want to add some cheese as well to your club sandwich.

  • Bacon Sandwich

If the simple BLT isn’t doing a lot for you, then you can always go ahead with your own version of a bacon sandwich You may or may not add butter, and you can add some catsup if you want.

The thing is, bacon pretty much goes with anything. Combine it with any cheese and any topping, and it’s still great. Why else is it such a popular addition to the cheeseburger?
